​​​​​​Management of State Lands


Any disposal of state land is subject to the Immovable Property (Tenure, Registration & Valuation) Law, Cap. 224 and to the Immovable Property of the Republic (Disposal) Regulations of 1989-99. Under the provisions of such Law and Regulations, the Council of Ministers may dispose of, i.e. grant, lease, and exchange or otherwise alienate any property of the Republic or vested in the Republic, to any person entitled thereto as well as to any corporation or local administration authority.

The Department of Lands and Surveys (State Land Management Section) is, under the same statutory guidelines, the administrative arm of the Government, responsible for the management of state-owned lands. The Section promotes strategies for management, conservation, revenue, enhancement, investment, and disposal of state lands. The Section's operating responsibilities also include, the preparation of contracts for the lease of state lands, examination of applications regarding the disposal of state lands within the British Sovereign Bases, examination of applications for rights-of-way via state lands, and licenses for use of state-owned land and waterways, reporting trespassers on state lands to the Police, forestation of state lands and generally, the development of legislative concepts and provision of information to legislative committees and other Departments/Services of the Republic.​
