PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND REMOTE SENSING SECTION

This Section’smission is theconduct of aerial photography and the production ofrelated products (Orthophotos, Digital Terrain and Elevation Models, Contour lines), in cooperation with experts from the private section, under service contract. The processing of aerial photographs and satellite images is intended tofacilitate:

  • The preparation of digital and analogue photogrammetric plans, insupport of the land and topographic mapping of Cyprus.
  • The photogrammetric rendering of topographic dataso as to help resolve difficult land cases, cases concerning development projects, etc.
  • The identification of historical Aerial Photographs and Satellite Images with Orthophotos and control points, which are needed to proceed various cases of cadastral and other interest.
  • The digitisation from hard copy and/or film of historical aerial photographs.
  • Provision of assistance to colleagues from other Sections of the DLS, assist them in handling their own cases.
  • The enrichment and update of the Photogrammetric Database.
  • The preparation of various photogrammetric products (Orthophotos, DTM, DSM, Contours etc.), in different resolutions etc. The basis shall be the primary products from the different Aerial Photographs.
  • The preparation of orthophoto maps from aerial photographs and satellite images.
  • The processing of requests from the public and other Public & Private Section Services.
  • Automatic detection of changes and objects from orthophotos, comparing their versions taken at different time periods.

In 2007, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Department of Landsand Surveysof the Ministry of Interior and the Department of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Communications and Works, for the production and continuous update of aeronautical and other related maps (on the basis of photogrammetric data) and the creation of an Aeronautical DataBase, in accordance with the provisions of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its Annexes, and the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.

For many years now, the Photogrammetry Sectionprovides-after thorough photogrammetric research and analysis of historical and currentdigital data- digital material for the identification of elements on the ground, which will help in determining the fate of the Missing Persons of 1963 & 1974.  

  • Continuous provision of photogrammetric data to the Photogrammetric Database.
  • Orthorectification of new Satellite Images taken in2021 and 2022, once these are submitted to the Department by the CAPO.
  • Ortho images of aerial photographs taken in1945, 1957, 1968, 1970 & 1973, needed for proceeding special cases.
  • Pursuitand processing of data from UAV-Drones flights.
  • Modernisation (update) of the 2014 Database of buildings, swimming pools and other real estate, with data from the Aerial Photography realised in 2019.
  • Development of three-dimensional (3D) models - Deformations from the 2019 Aerial Photography products, in pdf format for valuation purposes.
  • Aeronautical Cartography - Update of the Memorandum of Cooperation with the Civil Aviation - Coordination and communication with the Department of Civil Aviation for the preparation of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC). On 7 December 2020,our Department submitted its proposal and the proposal of the Department of Civil Aviation is expected.
  • Aeronautical Cartography - Update of the Obstacle Database and any related publications (for the Civil Aviation).
  • Creating Terrain, from the 2019 Aerial Photography products.
